LAMESA – The Brownfield Cubs baseball team traveled to Lamesa in District 3-3A play and lost 7-4 on Saturday, April 2. The Cubs trailed 2-0 at the end of the first inning but tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the third inning. The tie did not last long with Lamesa scoring a run in the bottom of the third against Brownfield to lead 3-2, and added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Cubs were held scoreless in the fourth and fifth inning, but added a run in the top of the sixth to trail 5-3. Yet the defense could not keep the home team scoreless as Lamesa added its final two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Brownfield went into the final inning trailing 7-3, and added a run but could not find a way to tie or take the lead. Head Coach Eric Morin spoke on his team’s performance. “It wasn’t the best, we definitely played better,” he said. “We did have a little run there in the end, we were still in the fight. But it’s a varsity sport and when you start getting behind it’s very difficult to come back. We have done it before but it didn’t go our way today.”

Brownfield man involved in fatal crash

A man from Brownfield was involved in a fatal crash in Ward County Sunday evening that took the life of a man from Monahans. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Anatolio Gallegos from Monahans was driving a pickup “at an unsafe speed” around a curve along State Highway 18 near Grandfalls. Micheal Navarrette, also from Monahans, was riding a motorcycle along the same curve, and Shawn Ried of Brownfield was driving a pickup behind the motorcycle.
