Lady Cubs set to play in Round 2 of playoffs

The Lady Cubs are coming off of a 24-1 victory over Kermit. Advancing the Lady Cubs to play Idalou in round 2 of the playoffs on Thursday, May 5th and Friday, May 6th at Lubbock Cooper. On Thursday the Lady Cubs will take the field at 6:30 P.M. and on Friday the Lady Cubs will take the field at the 6:30 P.M. as well. If it is necessary the Lady Cubs could possibly play a third game. The third game will be played 30 min after the second game if necessary.

Brownfield at Regional Track meet

The Brownfield high boys and girls teams performed at the regional track meet in Abilene on Friday, April 29 and 30. The first day of the meet was very successful for the Lady Cubs as well as The Cubs. At the regional meet the top 8 out of 16 advances to the finals on Saturday from the prelims on Friday. There is also a chance for a wild card spot, the wild card spot is determined from 3rd place in all 4 regions. The top 3rd place team will move on to state, the top 2 finishing times from each region move on automatically to perform in the State meet in Austin, Texas.

Drought Puts Farmers “In a Bind”

This year’s intense drought has brought into focus the business realities of farming. Mason Becker, a local West Texas farmer, secretary of Western Peanut Growers, and one of the directors on the Southwest Council of Agribusiness, said, “Nobody can hide from it(the drought), and being in West Texas we’re definitely accustomed to periods without rainfall, but this… The “year” that comes to mind is 2011. I can’t remember exactly what the total “rainfall” was, but I think like four and a half inches at the weather station, but we had farms that didn’t receive half an inch that year. So we’re creepin up on that. It’s definitely put us in a bind.” Becker went on to explain, “The non-irrigated land is sitting idle. There’s not been much ground prep that we’ve been able to do just because the conditions are so dry.” In dry conditions such as this year Becker explained the process of irrigation is constant, and slow. “Anything we don’t receive from rainfall is being pumped from the Ogallala Aquifer,” said Becker
