On Tuesday morning

On Tuesday morning at approximately 6:50 a.m. a truck accident was called in. The accident occurred about 3 miles south of Brownfield on US 62/385 near Birdsong Peanuts. According to DPS, on wet roads the truck was heading south in the right lane and lost control. The truck began to “fish tale” and slid to the left, turned on its side while going through the median. The truck came to a rest in the right lane and shoulder of the northbound lanes. The driver of the truck was transported to BRMC with unknown injuries.

Karen Elaine Rodgers Morgensen September 18, 1947 - March 12, 2020

Karen Elaine Rodgers Morgensen, 72, of Brownfield, TX, passed away on Thursday, March 12, 2020 at her home. She was born in Roscoe Texas to her parents Henry W. Rodgers and Arlie Burklow Rodgers. Rickey and Karen were married on June 7, 1969 and spent 51 years together and raised two children Jay and Jason. Karen is survived by her husband; Rickey Morgensen, children; Rickey Jay Morgensen and Jason Mogensen and his wife Priscilla, grandchildren; Colton, Hailie, Chelsea, Kelly and Leslie, brother; Bobby Rodgers, sisters; Connie Rodgers Cage and Jo Ann Burney. She was pre-deceased by her parents and brother; Jerry Paul Rodgers and sister; Joyce Rodgers Drake. Visitation was held Tuesday, March 17th from 2pm to 8 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home, 5740 W 19th St., Lubbock, TX 79407. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, March 18th at Resthaven Abbey Chapel.

Manuel Gutierrez May 17, 1939 - March 14, 2020

Brownfield — Funeral services for Manuel Gutierrez, 80, will be held Thursday, March 19, 2020 at 10:00 A.M. in the Ratliff Funeral Home Chapel with Jose Kochuparambil officiating. Services will be under the direction of Ratliff Funeral Home of Brownfield. He passed away Saturday, March 14, 2020 in Brownfield, Texas. He was born May 17, 1939, in College Station, Texas to the late Salyader Gutierrez and Amanda Delacruze Gutierrez. He was a farmer till his retirement He is survived by two sons; Richard Gutierrez of Brownfield and Johnny Gutierrez of Lubbock, Texas. Two daughters; Mary Sigala of Hobbs, New Mexico and Lisa Ruelas of El Paso, Texas and one sister Rosa Longoria of Tahoka, Texas. He has 21 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.

Ysmael H. Vela August 16, 1941 - March 14, 2020

Memorial services for Ysmael H. Vela will be held on Thursday March 19, 2020 at 2pm at Victory Worship Center in Brownfield, TX with Pastor Jimmy Vela officiating. Ysmo passed away, peacefully March 14, 2020 after an onset battle of cancer in his loving home. He was born on August 16, 1941 to Lorenzo and Barbra Vela in Yorktown, Tx. Ysmo married the love of his life Soveida Guzman on Mother’s Day, May 8, 1961 in Wharton, Tx. He was an amazing husband, loving father, grandfather, and a caring uncle, cousin, and friend. He was definitely a jokester. Always making someone laugh. Most importantly a God fearing and giving man who loved unconditionally. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lorenzo and Barbra Vela, 2 brothers, Domingo and Manuel Vela, 2 sisters, Criselda Gonzales and Palmira Puente, and 1 grandson, Jay Vela. Ysmo is survived by wife Soveida Vela of Brownfield, 5 children Jimmy and wife Janie Vela of Lubbock, Susan Olivan and husband John of Dallas, Eloy and wife Betty Vela of Brownfield, Mickie Vela and Vickie Vela Marroquin of Brownfield. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Lady Cubs fall in 2nd district game

The Brownfield Lady Cubs took to the diamond Saturday afternoon, possibly for the last time this season. The Lady Cubs hosted Slaton in both teams’ second district game. The Lady Cubs would find themselves down pretty quick as a Tigerette would knock one over the fence for a home run, making the early score 1-0 in the first inning. The Lady Cubs would respond in the bottom of the first with a score of their own, bringing the score 1-1.
