The U.S. unemployment rate has not gone down as quickly as Texas’ while it sits at 8.4%. In Texas, the unemployment rate now sits at 6.8% which is nearly double from the beginning of the year. According to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) nearly 3.5 million people have filed for unemployment since mid-March when the coronavirus really hit the state. In the week ending September 12, there were a total of 49,644 Texans who filed applications for unemployment benefits.
