Legislators to vote on home school bill

House Bill 547 was introduced to the Texas Senate on May 5, by Representative James Frank and sponsored by Republican and Democratic representatives. In its simplest form, the bill deals with authorizing schools to give home school students equal opportunity and access to play in University Interscholastic League (UIL) sponsored activities.

City Council welcomes new members with busy first day

With the Terry County General Elections held Saturday, May 1 the Brownfield City Council had two at large, District 4, and District 5 seats with only the District 5 seat having to go to an election. Following the election results, City Secretary Kelly Burris administered the oath of office to newly elected City Council member Micheal Tackitt followed by the three incumbents Michelle Cooper for District 4, Eric Horton for District 5, and Isaiah Bautista for one of the at large seats. Before Tackitt could take his seat on the council, Mayor Tom Hesse gave a plaque to outgoing councilmember Chuck Nave. With the new city council in place, the first order of business was to elect a Mayor Pro-Tem. Hesse explained the Mayor Pro-Tem is essentially the acting mayor whenever he is not in town or available and in council meetings should sit to his right, the council elected Judy Bessler as Mayor Pro-Tem.

BI-DISTRICT CHAMPS

Brownfield Lady Cubs and coaching staff celebrate with the golden glove after defeating Tornillo in the Bi-District round at Pecos on Saturday. The Lady Cubs face Idalou in a three game series with the opener on Friday at 6 p.m. at Frenship, and the second at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at Lubbock Christian High School. If there is a split the third game will be played at Lubbock Christian High on Saturday.

Will Hawkins to resign from BISD board at end of month

On April 27, Brownfield Board of Trustee at large member Will Hawkins sent BISD Board of Trustee President Geoff Cooper his letter of resignation. Hawkins has been on the board since 2017 and in his letter of resignation states, he has been proud of the changes the board has made.

Texas Comptroller releases April sales tax revenue and revised revenue estimate

Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar released the data on the state’s sales tax revenue for the month of April. The amount was $3.4 billion, which is a record for the monthly total and a 31.4 percent increase from last year.

The Brownfield Water and Wastewater Department

The Brownfield Water and Wastewater Department work on making a new manhole on North Cub Drive. The new manhole is being made due to the new Brownfield High School building. There is no timetable on how long the project will take.

Terry voters choose incumbents for another term

When the voters in Brownfield District 5 and Meadow went to the polls on Saturday, May 1, they had a choice of keeping the status quo or change. When the clock struck 7 p.m., the two polling places closed, and after the votes were counted by the new voting machine bought by the county, the voters chose to stick with all four incumbents for the foreseeable future.
