Summer Track:Off to The Races

It’s an exciting time for the Brownfield community as parents get to watch their young ones excel in sports this summer. There are lots of sports camps hosted by Brownfield varsity coaches this time of year. Brownfield track Coach Valensuala is hosting her fun track camp this summer. It got underway on Tuesday, May 31. The track camp has 6 fun practices in the month of June and at the end of it all has there’s a track meet for everyone to enjoy. The fun part is that Brownfield won’t be the only one at this track meet, multiple schools come together at the end of the camp and hold a track meet to let the participants compete with more than just their peers.

Buffalo Adventure Run

Buffalo Adventure Run, an exciting road rally event that will lead teams of drivers through a series of challenges from Buffalo Gap, Texas to the Four Corners Monument and back, began on June 2. The drivers stopped in Brownfield at the Stripes on Tahoka Road for a pit stop. The event is for a great cause, raising money for Camp Able of Buffalo Gap, an organaziation that provides invaluable theraputic riding services. The first team to make it back home wins the cash prize, all while completing the journey in a $500 car of their choosing.

OFFICIAL ALL-STAR 2022 BROWNFIELD GAME TEXAS

The 806 All-star game will be hosted by your hometown at the NEW Brownfield ISD gym! The All-star game is set to take place on Saturday, June 4. The 5th and 6th grade girls will play at 2 pm, while the 5th and 6th grade boys hit the court at 3:30 pm. The 7th grade and 8th grade girls play at 5 pm, and at 6:30 pm the 7th grade 8th grade boys play.

Unrelenting Gas Prices

Despite a recent price drop, higher gas prices continue to impact businesses and individuals all over the country. A Brownfield local explained, “gas prices affect everything.” He meant that the rising cost of gas by extension raises the cost of other goods and services. For example, he said shipping costs have risen tremendously. His company’s shipper showed him the cost of shipping the same item today in comparison to last year. The price difference was staggering, he explained. But he said “ship it anyway.” He had no choice, he explained. He added, “if it keeps going like this it doesn’t matter how much you’ve saved, it’s going to affect everyone.”

MyTurn: Hope for Civility

When I was in high school in Fort Worth in the 1970s, my girlfriend’s grandmother would come to visit from Missouri, and sometimes I’d be invited over for dinner and conversation. Mama Dee, as her grandchildren called her, was an old-fashioned person. She was mannerly and reserved in a sunny kind of way, always projecting a pleasant expression and perpetually looking for the best in people, even when there wasn’t much “best” there. She was a Democrat, and as the Watergate scandal began unraveling the presidency of Richard Nixon, who was a Republican, Mama Dee would say, “I think we should always support our president.”

Our Man In Uvalde: Reaction to the Shooting

Not surprisingly, there is a lot of anger, finger-pointing, and confusion surrounding last week’s devastating school shooting in Uvalde. When Texas Governor Greg Abbot arrived in tandem with President Joe Biden to pay respects outside of Robb Elementary School, Governor Abbot was greeted with boos from the crowd. Later when President Biden was leaving a church after having a prayer session with Uvalde locals he was turned away from the crowd with chants of, “do something! Don’t just come here, do something!” The people want change. No one wants to see a tragedy like this happen again. But what can be done?
