County Commissioners discuss Cemetery concerns

The situation was outlined to the Commissioners’ Court at Monday morning’s meeting by two contrasting voices, Karen Grigsby, the County Treasurer and Buzz Steele, the President of the Cemetery Board. Karen Grigsby, the county treasurer spoke first, she explained that the treasurer’s office has “kept the records and housed everything for the (cemetery) association for the past 35 to 40 years.” She said that the service was offered by a past treasurer, but “it’s not a core duty of a county treasurer, it’s actually just an extra job on top of our already full time job.” She added that because of the added workload of managing the cemetery, “it has become burdensome to do our county duties that we were elected to do.” The commissioners noted that managing the cemetery has become a more time consuming task compared to 40 years ago. Precinct 3 County Commissioner Martin LeFevere mentioned that Brownfield’s population was much smaller at that time.
