Brownfield Runnin Cubs improve to 3-0 in district play defeating Lamesa Golden Tornados 62- 46

The Runnin Cubs remain undefeated in district play through three games after downing the Golden Tornados 62-46. There are so many different words or phrases that come to mind when talking about Brownfield vs Lamesa on the basketball court a couple of those being “big time rivalry” and “instant classic.” Both of those were exactly how you would describe Friday’s meeting between the two schools. It was a fast-paced game right out of the gate, but early on it was in favor of Lamesa who scored the first 6 points of the game capitalizing off winning the tipoff, a Brownfield missed shot, and a Brownfield turnover. JoJo Carrillo would help settle down the Cubs as he would open the scoring and after seeing that first bucket fall there was a sense of calmness for the team. Both schools would continue to run up and down the floor till Lamesa called its first timeout of the game as they held a 12-10 lead with 2:45 left in the first quarter. The time would wind fast with Lamesa outscoring Brownfield 7-5 in the final 2:45 of the quarter and they had a 19-15 lead going into the second. Brownfield would open the second frame on a 7-0 scoring run making the score 22-19 in favor of the Runnin Cubs that would be ended by a Golden Tornado free throw, but that would be there only point for a while as they endured a scoring drought thanks to Brownfield doing a great job holding Lamesa to one shot on many possessions and forcing them to turn the ball over as well. Lamesa however would fight back some before going to the halftime break sparking a 5-0 run, but Brownfield still led 27-25. Out of the break the scoring slowed down a bit due to both teams running some sets in the half court and turning the ball over. But Brownfield would end the 3 rd quarter on a 9- 2 run and led going into the last frame 45-31. Just when you thought Brownfield could pull away Lamesa was able to tighten up the defense and go on a 13-2 scoring with the score now being 47-44 still in favor of the Runnin Cubs but there was still plenty of game left with 4:52 on the clock. Fortunately, everyone for Brownfield stepped up when their number was called and slammed the door shut going on a huge 15-2 run and winning the game 62-46. Brownfield was led in scoring by Malik Mason with 15, while Pedro Rodriguez finished just behind him with 14, Jeron Lawrence put up 11, and KJ Carroll and JoJo Carrillo had 9, and 8 respectively. The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs will be back in action Tuesday night as they’ll be in Littlefield taking on the Wildcats. Tipoff is set for 7:30 and a livestream broadcast of the game can be found on brownfieldcubs.com
