  • Rita Torrez Riojas

Our beloved mother, grandmother, and wife passed away July 3, 2022 surrounded by her family. Rita Torrez Riojas was born on February 21, 1943, on a farm in Hockley County to Nicanor and Rita Torrez.

She married the love of her life of 60 years, Genovevo Riojas, on November 16, 1961, in Miami, Florida. Rita was a migrant worker for many years, a cafeteria worker at Brownfield Intermediate School, and a housewife. She was also a caretaker for her mother-in-law, mother, and daughter-in-law. She played a role in raising each one of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as the family grew. Rita was known for her hospitality to strangers and family

Rita was known for her hospitality to strangers and family alike, many of whom lovingly called her Grandma. She loved watching her grandkids participate in sports and was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Texas Tech Red Raiders, often out cheering whoever was watching games with her. She loved to quilt, embroider and crochet and taught those skills to others. She meticulously made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren creating unique patterns and hand stitching each one. She also loved to cook and many meals were shared in her kitchen, which was the heart of the home. Her tortillas were always on the menu and everyone will definitely miss those, especially Geno. Rita was a life-long member of the Brownfield Church of Christ. She was strong in her faith and hoped for all to be Godly in their walk of life. The Riojas family would like to thank Bridge Hospice for their care and support.

Rita is preceded in death by her parents, Nicanor and Rita Torrez, three sisters Ortencia Garza, Ninfa Martinez and Bertha Riojas, one brother, Nicanor Torrez, and daughterin-law Bernice Arrezola Riojas.

She is survived by her husband, Genovevo Riojas. Four sisters: Santos Martinez (Brownfield), Oralia Coronado (Homestead, FL), Estella Torrez (Ruskin, FL), Yolanda Torrez (Brownfield) and one brother, Fred (Maya) Torrez (Warren, MN). Her children: Ramon (Lacie) Riojas (Brownfield), Felix (Eileen) Riojas (Brownfield), Robert (Colleen) Riojas (Plainview, TX), Angela (Bobby) Lawrence (Brownfield) and Irene (Javiel) Riojas-Ramirez (Round Rock, TX). Ten grandchildren: Jason Molina, Valerie Flores, Jonathon Lawrence, Kristen Carden, Erin Lawrence, Donovan Riojas, Zachary Tovar, Jeron Lawrence, Jaesie Casanova, Beya Brown and 12 great-grandchildren.
