Devotional: Have You Opened Your Gift Yet?

Who doesn't like to get gifts? I have occasionally been the person who has had a hard time receiving gifts, but that's not to say I don't like getting them. What I mean is, we often feel undeserving. But it's fun to open presents, no matter who (or what age) we are.

Brownfield falls to Levelland 49-42

Levelland travelled to ‘The PIT’ Tuesday night as they took on the Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs and left with a victory 49-42. Levelland brought in a team that carried some decent size and that showed early on as the length played a factor in the Cubs offensive possessions. Fortunately, the Cubs did just enough on the defensive side as well to force the Lobos into some turnovers as well. Jeron Lawrence helped jump start the Cubs offense scoring four of the first five points, by the end of the first quarter Brownfield was on top 12-9 after a 3-point shot was made by Pedro Rodriguez with a few seconds left. Coming out to start the 2nd Levelland scored back-to- back buckets which caused Coach McPherson to call a timeout. Out of the timeout Brandon Anthony was able to knock down a three to stop the short run. Both schools struggled to find consistent offense in the second quarter but most of that is a credit to the defense that was showcased on both sides. By the end of the second quarter Levelland worked to earn a 22-20 lead. This trend would continue in the second half for Brownfield as 3-point shots were not falling and trips to the free throw line would come up bare but would receive some sparks from the freshman Lawrence when the team really needed a bucket. Brownfield would go into the 4th quarter trailing 32-38. To start the 4th Levelland came out extremely aggressive and got to the basket to get some easy points and pad their lead. A small 5-0 run prompted another McPherson timeout as Levelland now led 37-28. Out of the timeout Brownfield was able to get some good looks and cash in for some points but was not able to get the stops that were needed to break into the deficit. Another timeout would be taken by Brownfield as Levelland now had a 41-32 lead. This time out created a spark that the Cubs needed to get back in the game as Lawrence would go on a 6-0 run on his own to pull his team within three. Levelland would call a timeout with 2:05 left in the ball game up 41-38, out of this timeout they would get a good look at the rim to add two more points to their lead, but Brownfield wasn’t done yet as the freshman Rodriguez hit a huge three to bring Brownfield within 2 points with 1:01 left in the game. Unfortunately, the comeback would fall short as Levelland was able to pull away from Brownfield and won the game 49-42. Brownfield was led in scoring by Jeron Lawrence who finished with 15, Pedro Rodriguez followed suit with 8, and JoJo Carrillo also had 5 on the night. The Brownfield Runnin’ Cubs will be back in action Friday night as they will travel to Big Spring to take on the Steers. Tipoff is set for 7:30.
