Brownfield gets back on track beating Muleshoe 46-36

After a tough loss Tuesday night in Littlefield, Brownfield needed to get back on track and they did exactly that after defeating Muleshoe 46-36. It was a slow start for both schools as the defenses were stout, both teams had some opportunities to score but were not able to cash in. By the end of the first quarter Brownfield held a 7-6 lead. The second quarter the defenses for both schools remained stout as they both quietly scored 10 points apiece and going into the halftime break Brownfield still led 17-6. Whatever the message was in the locker room from Coach McPherson it was received well as the Runnin Cubs came out on a 12-2 run fueled by aggressive defense. With 2:24 Muleshoe called a timeout to get them back on track and it worked as Muleshoe finished the quarter on a 5-0 run but Brownfield took a 29-22 lead into the final frame. Muleshoe did everything they could to find their way back in to the game but Brownfield never allowed Muleshoe to get themselves back in it. When Brownfield needed an answer in the fourth and they got it from junior guard JoJo Carrillo who had 9 fourth quarter points to keep Brownfield in the drivers seat, and Malik Mason was able to deliver the dagger as he nailed a mid-range jumper with a minute left in the game the final score being 46-36. Brownfield was led in scoring by Carrillo who had 21 points, while both Jeron Lawrence, and Malik Mason chipped in 8. The Runnin Cubs will be back in action Friday night inside “The PIT” as they’ll welcome the Denver City Mustangs. TipOff is set for 7:30 PM, a livestream broadcast of the game can be found on brownfieldcubs.com

Lady Cubs drop third straight to Lady Mules 62-41

The Brownfield Lady Cubs were looking to get back on track Friday night against the Muleshoe Lady Mules but were unable to as they lost 62-41. Muleshoe came out of the gates looking good as they played great defensively enforcing a side defense cutting the court into a third, and the Lady Cubs struggled to adjust to it as turnovers were an issue in the quarter. Part of the issue was the Lady Cubs started the game trying to feed Jaelyn Molina inside the paint, but Muleshoe would not allow her to get a touch as they relentlessly jumped in the passing lanes. Muleshoe would capitalize on the turnovers in the first and use it to knock down 3 3’s in the first to get the offense rolling. The Lady Cubs best offense was out in transition when Muleshoe could not get their side defense initiated which is how Brownfield accounted for their 8 first quarter points. By the end of the first quarter the score was 13-8 in favor of Muleshoe. To start the second Muleshoe would go on a 9-3 run courtesy of good defense and finding ways to break down Brownfields defense. The Lady Cubs did have opportunities to get points on the board as they shot 12 free throws in the quarter but only cashed in on two of them. Going into the locker room Muleshoe led 30-14. In the third quarter Muleshoe remained aggressive on defense and never really allowed Brownfield to get anything going. Muleshoe used these turnovers to their advantage once more as they put up 20 points just in the third frame. At the end of the third quarter, they led 50-22. Brownfield never gave up as they continued to play hard, but the defense of Muleshoe proved to be too much as ultimately Brownfield would fall 62-42. Brownfield was led in scoring Alli Coffey who had 10, Kaylynn Fininen had 7, and Kayleigh Saldana and Jaelyn Molina both had 5. The Lady Cubs will be back in action at home on Tuesday night as they begin the second half of district play against Denver City. TipOff is set for 6:15 PM, a livestream of the game can be found on brownfieldcubs.com
