Joe Scott Layland entered the gates of Heaven on October 5, 2022. Joe was born to Greta and Don Layland in Brownfield, Texas, on July 13, 1962. He attended schools in Brownfield, Texas, graduating there in 1980. Joe served as president of his senior class and, more importantly, as ringleader of countless shenanigans throughout his high school career. He earned the love and respect of his classmates early on and kept them laughing hysterically most of the time. Joe’s teachers likely recall this testimony as well.

After high school, Joe held a variety of managerial roles in various retail stores. He stayed in Texas many years, ultimately moving from Brownfield to Lubbock to Irving to San Antonio. He later lived a coast-to-coast experience, spending a few years in Tampa, Florida, and ending with the last few years in Anaheim, California. Joe yearned to return to his family and friends in Texas, and shortly before his untimely death, he had firmed up plans to move to Dallas for retirement within the next year. Sweet Jesus had other plans for Joe.

Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Greta Ailshie; his father, Don Layland; his brother, Eddie Ailshie; and his grandmother, Paulette Howell. One memorable and inspirational memory is that when Joe tragically lost his mother as a young teenager (shattering his world as one might expect), he used his faith and strength in Jesus Christ and forged deep-rooted and enduring relationships with countless friends. Joe was a survivor, and he brightened the world for so many around him.

Joe is survived by his pup, Blaze, and a host of friends and family who loved him deeply and now mourn this great loss. A Celebration of Life will be held November 4, 2022, 5:00 p.m., at the Cathedral of Hope, 5910 Cedar Springs Rd, Dallas, TX 75235.
