A house fire on Saturday morning took the life of 35 year-old Benjamin Nerek of 1302 North Atkins. The fire appears to have started in an addition on the back of the house, which is where the victim was located. The fire is still under investigation at this time. PC: Eric Horton

Read moreThe Department of Public Safety has officially issued a 60 day notice related to the COVID waiver signed by Governor Greg Abbott on March 2020. The waiver applied to driver license, commercial license, learner permits, ID cards, and election identification certificates that expired on or after March 13, 2020. The waiver granted to Texans who fell in that category an extended period of time to get their renewal done safely during the early stages of the pandemic. DPS has now given anyone who has not gotten their renewal done until April 14, 2021.

This general election there will be two elections for City of Brownfield District 5 and Meadow ISD. Incumbent city councilman Eric Horton will face off against challenger Julian Silva Hernandez for District 5. Meadow ISD board of trustees incumbents Jody Woodard, Ruben Villalpando, and Daniel Harrington will face off against challenger Chris Castilleja for one of three at large seats.

Read moreThe South Plains Underground Water Conservation District is sponsoring the annual essay contest for senior students at Brownfield, Meadow, and Wellman-Union high schools. All senior students are eligible to enter the essay contest. First place contest winners from each school will receive a $1,000 scholarship and second place winners will receive a $500 scholarship to the college or university of their choice. Scholarship funds will be paid directly to the university/college upon confirmation of enrollment in classes (not to the individual student). Scholarships will be awarded contingent upon receipt of qualified submissions based on the criteria outlined below as determined by the scholarship committee.
