The Brownfield track and field team has been preparing for the return of spring sports for a long time. Head coach Taheric Brantley has been working with his players since November instead of January, which is the regular start for the season. He is doing this because last season the team had its season cut short due to COVID-19, and this year the meets will be done differently to stay in compliance with COVID regulations set by the state and University Interscholastic League and there will be less meets than before.

Read moreWhen I awoke from a peaceful night sleep the sun had not yet made its appearance but it was light outside. The sounds which had awakened me was that of my mother-in-law clanging pans in the kitchen as she prepared to fix breakfast for her visiting kids, grandkids and in-laws, of which I was one. There would soon be fresh eggs and bacon with hot biscuits, homemade butter and chocolate gravy. Yum! We teased “mom” about her early morning noise making, but in reality it was a pleasant, comforting, homey sound. I drew the window curtains back and looked outside. Not thirty feet from my window, there were three white tailed deer, two of them standing and one lying down as if resting. They were hearing the noise from the kitchen, but not particularly alarmed by it. I took a deep breath of the cool morning air and thought, “It don’t get any better than this.”
Read moreA house fire on Saturday morning took the life of 35 year-old Benjamin Nerek of 1302 North Atkins. The fire appears to have started in an addition on the back of the house, which is where the victim was located. The fire is still under investigation at this time. PC: Eric Horton
