Unemployment rate increases in February

The Texas Workforce Commission released unemployment figures for February and unemployment increased to 6.9 percent from 6.8 in January. TWC announced the state lost 27,500 nonagricultural jobs in the month, the first decrease in ten months. Employment in the private sector decreased by 19,300 jobs.

Dian Dawson

Dian Dawson of Brownfield Texas, passed away March 28, 2021. Graveside service will be held Thursday, April 1, 2021, at Terry County Memorial Cemetery at 2:00 pm. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 31, 2021, from 6 pm - 8 pm at the Brownfield Funeral Home. Dian was born October 14, 1952 to Stanley and Zelma Miller in Brownfield, Texas. Dian traveled with Marvin to Germany while he served in the Army, shortly after being married. Dian obtained a Master of Business Administration from Wayland Baptist University. She worked for the Region 17 Service Center for 17 years and was a business service accountant. She helped Marvin start and build Dawson Electric and Refrigeration, which they ran for 30 years. Dian was passionate about her crafts, birds and dogs. She was the architect and designer of the house they built together in 2018. She was a member of the Spencer Theater in Ruidoso, New Mexico and always enjoyed going to the shows there. Dian is preceded in death by her husband, Marvin, and her father Stanley Miller. Dian is survived by her son, Michael and wife Pebble, one grandson, Mason and three granddaughters, Mallori, Swayde Roberts and Jaci Roberts, one great granddaughter, Autumn; her sister Vickie Coker of Lubbock and her mother, Zelma Miller of Brownfield, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Morris “Gene” Rowden

Morris “Gene” Rowden, 90, passed away on Sunday, March 28, 2021. Gene was born in Brownfield, Texas to Johnny Carrol Rowden and Azrue Pickett. Gene was a resident of San Angelo for 55 years. He was in the Air Force and served as a Chief Master Sergeant for 30 years. He also served as the President of Board of Directors for First Community Credit Union. One of many of his hobbies included collecting stamps for more than 65 years. Gene was a member of the Lions Club for 55 years and also served as the President for many years. Gene is preceded in death by his wife, Syble Glyndola and his son, Michael Rowden. Survivors include his children, Boyd Rowden, Brett Rowden and wife Patricia; grandchildren, Jason Rowden, Matt Reel, Caitlin Mocchetti, Michelle Rowden; great-grandchildren Camry Reel and William Reel; brother, Lee Dale Rowden. Graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, April 1, 2021 at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. Services are under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home/Sherwood Way. Lady Cubs softball improves to 2-0 in district

The Brownfield softball team welcomed Littlefield to its home field on Saturday, March 27 for its first home game and second game in District 3-3A. The Lady Cubs were coming off a 14-0 win over Denver City in their district road opener. The Lady Cubs did not show the same scoring prowess in the opener but continued to show strong pitching and defensive play in their 11-0 win in six innings over Littlefield, after a two-run homer from Ashli Nicole Gutierrez in the sixth with no outs activated the ten run rule.

Brownfield track and field team prepare for district meet

The Brownfield track and field team competed at the Dimmitt meet on Friday, March 26, the last meet before the district meet in Denver City tomorrow(Thursday). Head coach Taheric Brantley is excited for what his team can do in district as they are peaking at the right time.
