Ruth Inez King

Graveside service for Ruth Inez King, 91, of Brownfield will be held at Scranton Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2022. Visitation will be held at Brownfield Funeral Home from 5-7pm on Tuesday, July 12, 2022. Ruth Inez King was born on September 1, 1930 to S. L. and Cora Cook in Cisco. She was a member of Brownfield Church of Christ. Alvin was a gin manager for many cotton gins in the area and Ruth was always by his side as his bookkeeper. She was a quiet and gentle spirt and a faithful servant to the Lord. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ruth is preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Hawkins King; parents, S.L. and Cora Cook and a son-in-law, Lee Martin. Ruth is survived by her son, Kyle King and wife Dayna; daughters, Patty Snider and husband John and Paula Martin; 8 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren.

James (Jim) Andrew Ervin

Jim passed from this life June 30, 2022, in Lubbock, TX, at 87 years of age. He entered this life June 23, 1935, in Altus, OK, to Martin Lewis and Mable (Glover) Ervin. Jim grew up in Brownfield and graduated from Brownfield High School. He married Theresa Caffey December 14, 1979. Together they had 2 daughters, Kim and Penny. Jim became a salesman and worked oil field sales for 40 years. Jim and Theresa attended Quaker Avenue Church of Christ. He enjoyed woodworking, spending time with family, and reading.

BABE RUTH REGIONAL SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT

Justin Cabe and the Terry County Youth Sports swung for the fence and landed the Babe Ruth Southwest Region Softball Tournament this week. Justin was asked how Terry County managed to land such a great event? He said it’s simple. Hard work, “Last year we hosted the state tournament here and Queston Perry he was real big in helping us get that and so last year we had a couple girls qualify for regionals in Houma, Louisiana and while out there Joe Ky Shultz our Regional Director was out there he was talking to one of the directors and next thing you know we’re getting text and calls asking if we were interested in hosting the tournament, so we put our name in and we were selected.”

Love For The Game

There is no question Glen Meranto, a Mississippi native, loves the game. In fact, He has so much passion for the game whether it’s softball or baseball, that He became an umpire. He loves to call balls and strikes but he loves seeing these young people get opportunities in the game even more,”you’re never gonna know who’s watching. That’s what I tell the kids. There could be LSU coaches, Texas Tech coaches at the game. It’s important they be on their best behavior because there are millions of kids that want to play college ball but at the end of the day if someone is watching you and you don’t have the right attitude or personality nobody wants that. Everybody is setting an example on how to compose yourself not only on the field but most importantly outside the field and you’re not just a good baseball player but you’re setting an example for your community and your town. They matter just as much as your play on the field does”.
