Wildcats losing streak continues

The Wellman-Union boys’ basketball team hosted Sands on Tuesday looking to avoid its fifth straight loss and earn its first win of the season. The Wildcats put up a fight but fell 79-41 to Sands. The Wildcats ended the first quarter trailing 23-12, but had a bad second half where they scored only five points to go into the break trailing 39-17. After the break, Wellman found its offense scoring 18 points but the defense allowed 24 points to the visitors. The Wildcats needed a big rally in the fourth to erase a 63-35 deficit but Sands held them to only six points.

Lady ‘Cats fall at home

The Wellman-Union girls’ basketball team hosted Class 1A No. 4 Sands on Tuesday night looking to avoid its second straight loss. The Lady ‘Cats faced a difficult task trying to upset the No. 4 ranked team and the task became much more difficult when they trailed 27-4 at the end of the first. The Lady ‘Cats’ struggles continued in the second where they lost the quarter 20-8 and went into halftime trailing 47-12. The second half was the same as the first as Sands was too much for the Wellman and they lost the third quarter 20-1 and the fourth 16-2.

Broncos lose by one at home

The Meadow boys’ basketball team hosted Stanton on Tuesday night looking to win its first home game of the season. The Broncos came close but lost 42-41 to the Buffaloes. It was a close game for all four quarters with the Broncos trailing 11-10 after one-quarter of play. Meadow went into the half with a 21-20 lead and held onto the one-point lead at the end of the third 32-31. But Stanton went on to win the fourth quarter 11-9, and steal the home win from the Broncos.

Lady Broncos lose fourth straight

The Meadow girls’ basketball team hosted Stanton on Tuesday night looking to snap a three-game losing streak. Yet the Lady Broncos suffered from a cold start losing the first quarter 20-2 and faced an uphill battle to end their losing streak. Meadow’s defense improved in the second quarter but the offense continued to struggle with both teams scoring only six points, and the Lady Broncos trailing 26-8 at halftime. The Lady Broncos struggled after the break as Stanton went on to win the quarter 16-5. Trailing 42-13 going into the final quarter, the Lady Broncos looked for a final rally to win at home. Meadow went on the win the fourth, 10-7, but it was not enough to snap its losing streak.

Lady Cubs win sixth straight

The Brownfield girls’ basketball team was on the road visiting Monterey on Tuesday night. The Lady Cubs opened the game with a quick start leading 19-9 at the end of the first quarter. Brownfield struggled on the defensive end in the second quarter allowing Monterey to score 17 points and cut the lead to 35-26 at halftime. Brownfield continued to struggle on the defensive end in the third quarter losing 18-15 and having its nine-point lead cut to six. The Lady Cubs found their rhythm in the final quarter on both ends as they scored 22 points and held the home team to a low seven points to secure their sixth straight win.

The Brownfield boys’ basketball team suffered two big losses to Coronado and Rockwall Heath and looked to erase the bad taste of losing when it hosted Tulia on Tuesday night. Both teams came into the game short-handed with the Cubs calling up a few junior varsity players for the night. The Cubs went on to defend their home court with a 74-58 win in what many will remember as a tale of two halves for the Cubs.
