Gas Prices Drop

Good news for Texas drivers: gas prices dropped 1.7 cents in the past week, averaging $2.86/g on Monday. Texas gas prices are 1.1 cents per gallon lower than a month ago, but 86.3 cents lower than a year ago. Gas prices in Brownfield currently range from $2.73 to $2.79. According to Gas- Buddy price reports, the cheapest station in Texas was priced at $2.45/g yesterday while the most expensive was $3.99/g, a difference of $1.54/g. The lowest price in the state yesterday was $2.45/g while the highest was $3.99/g, a difference of $1.54/g. The national average price of gasoline has risen 2.3 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.29/g. The national average is down 5.5 cents per gallon from a month ago and stands 97.5 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.

Leona Margaret Henneke Schertz

Leona Margaret Henneke Schertz passed away on January 9, 2022 at the age of 91. She was born to parents Leo and Josephine Kuhn Henneke in Cat Springs, Texas on November 15, 1930 and was raised in Bernardo, Texas. Leona was baptized into the Catholic faith in Mentz, Tx. at St. Rochs. She attended school in Bernardo. On November 9, 1948, Leona was joined in marriage to Vincent Schertz at St. Roch’s Catholic Church in Mentz, Texas. She is survived by her daughters, Ann Socha Bird and husband Bill, and Lois Howard and husband Donnie; grandchildren: Jennifer Hogue and husband Tim, Chris Howard and wife JJ, Mike Socha and wife Charlotte, Julie Socha, Scott Socha and wife Renee, Sarah Waters, and John Socha; great-grandchildren: Kurt, Allison, Hunter, Holly, Spencer, Abby, Loy, Jacob, Liz, Zach, Maddie, Ava Kate, Claire, Holden, Jaydon, Garrett, Ethan, Dean, Addyson and Merrick; great-great grandchildren: Layla, Hazel, and Harry, and brother Joe Henneke and wife Jocelyn, sister-in-law Cecilia Schertz. She is survived by many nieces and nephews that she loved dearly. Being a devout Catholic, Leona was a member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church for 64 years. She was very involved in the church being a member of the Altar Society. She worked at Meals on Wheels for 30 years upon her retirement. Leona was a devoted wife and mom to her husband and daughters. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren made her very proud. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son-in-law Ronnie Socha, sisters Marie Poenitzsch and Cecilia Luedeke, brothers Aloies and Ebert Henneke, brother-in-law Alois Schertz and sister-in-law Mary Supak. A private funeral ceremony with Father John Ohling will be held at the Brownfield Funeral Home on January 16, 2022. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Anthony Catholic Church, 1902 Levelland Highway, Brownfield, Tx 79316.

Dolores “Dorey” Mae Gaither

Dolores “Dorey” Mae Gaither, 87, of Clyde died Saturday, January 8, 2022, at an Abilene care center. Funeral services will be Friday, January 14, 2022, at 9:00 a.m. at Hillcrest Church of Christ Chapel, 650 E. Ambler Ave. in Abilene with Jason Howard officiating. Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Texas State Veterans Cemetery under the direction of Bailey-Howard Funeral Home. Dorey was born July 31, 1934, in Independence, Kansas to Luther L. and Alice Shepherd. She married James Kenneth Gaither July 19, 1952, in Montebello, California. Dorey was a homemaker and a member of the Hillcrest Church of Christ. Before coming to Abilene, she was a member of Brownfield Church of Christ, where she taught children’s bible classes on Sunday and Wednesday nights, the children’s bible class for ladies bible class on Wednesday morning. She also taught bible class at their Thursday school program. She taught her grandchildren and great-grandchildren with her flannel graphs and characters. Dorey loved to sit on the porch or in the backyard where she would watch birds, squirrels, and butterflies. She loved to cook her favorite traditional Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner – turkey, dressing, and apple and cherry pies. She always wore the biggest smile and had a positive attitude. Dorey is preceded in death by her parents, Luther and Alice and in-laws, Kervy and Lilly Gaither, her husband, James Gaither, two sons, David and Kenneth Allan Gaither, son-in-law, Johnnie Howard, and grandson, Wade Howard. She is survived by her daughters, Brenda Howard of Clyde and Dorey Brown of Lubbock, grandchildren, Heather Mc- Clure and husband, Scott of Abilene and Jason Howard and wife, Allison of Keller, and great-grandchildren, Megan McClure of Wichita Falls, Bethany McClure of Abilene, Jessie Howard of Nocona, Harper Howard, Bailey Howard, and Ellis Howard, all of Keller. Dorothy Cobitt Terry

Funeral service for Dorothy Cobitt Terry were held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 13, 2022 at Brownfield Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation was held 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at the Brownfield Funeral Home. Dorothy passed away to glory on January 10, 2022 surrounded by her family in her home. Dorothy was born February 21, 1921 in Quitman, TX to Henry Houston Corbitt and Rose Della Bailey Corbitt. She was raised in Loyola, TX and graduated from Klondike High School. She married Fred Eugene Terry July 22, 1939 in Big Springs, TX. In their 64 years of marriage Fred and Dorothy owned and operated a Gas Station in Hot Springs, owned and operated the laundry in Meadow and farmed in this area and Dalhart for many years. They retired from farming in Dalhart in 1973 and moved back to Brownfield 1993. During those retired years they enjoyed traveling and spent a lot of time being snowbirds. Dorothy had many hobbies including; sewing, gardening, playing bridge and floral arrangement. One of her favorite things were hummingbirds and camping, but most of all she loved her family and friends. She was a member of the Brownfield United Methodist Church. Survivors include two sons, Royce Terry and his wife Bobbie Beasley of Meadow, TX; Loy Terry of Waxahachie. She was Memaw to six grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and they all loved her dearly. Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Fred, parents, three sisters, two brothers, daughter in law, Susan Terry of Waxachie and a great granddaughter Christen Bryce Terry of Wolfforth.

Lady Cubs earn easy home win

The Brownfield girls’ basketball team returned home and earned a comfortable 84-21 win over Lamesa on Tuesday night. The Lady Cubs improve to 6-0 in District 3-3A and continue in first place and in position to win back-to-back District 3-3A titles. The Lady Cubs had four players finish in double digit scoring with Ashley Ramirez and Deja Johnson both scoring 16 points a piece and Shy’la Blackwell and Gabi Fields both scoring 12 points each. Tia Johnson led the team in rebounds with 11 with 8 on the defensive boards and assists with 5. Fields led the team in steals with 8. As a team the Lady Cubs outrebounded Lamesa 36-21 overall, 33-27 on the defensive end, and 13-10 on the offensive end. They had 18 steals and 20 assists, and forced Lamesa into 13 turnovers.
