Wellman-Union lost again Friday, but fortunately not by as much as some of their other recent defeats.
The Wildcats made a quick trip across the Terry-Gaines County line to claw up a fight in Loop, but ultimately returned with a 26-36 loss and a frustrating 0-16 season record.
They trailed the Longhorns by only a single basket or so nearly the entire first half, but kept falling further behind the second in spite of some great effort.
"(We) played a great game,” said Head Coach JoeBob Ussery. "If we were more aggressive going to the hole, we definitely could have taken this one. I was proud of the efforts of the team tonight.”
Scorers included Luis Gonzales 3-1 9, Martin Loewen 1-1 0-2 5, Nathaniel Steiger 0-1 2-2 5, Vincent Tedford 0-1 3, Kirk Martin 1-0 2 and Kirby Bailey 1-0 2.
The Wildcats and Lady ‘Cats will be back home Tuesday to host the Dawson Dragons.
The junior high boys team suffered a 28-29 loss in overtime to Grady Thursday night that Coach Isaac Martinez described as a "very exciting and fun game.”
They were ahead 14-8 at halftime, but fell behind in the third quarter and caught up in the fourth to tie the score. Marcos Escobar and Esau Macias each scored 10 points for the young Wildcats.
"The game didn’t turn out the way we wanted, but I couldn’t be more proud of these boys and the effort they put out,” Martinez said. "...A goal of ours at the beginning of the year was to be competitive, and we are showing it. There are three games left, and our next goal is to win.”
