The Lady Broncos weren’t as successful as the boys Tuesday night, or at least not when it counted. They ultimately suffered a devastating 29-30 defeat, after maintaining a 10-point advantage over the Lady Eagles through the second quarter but scoring only six points the entire second half.
As the winged visitors landed basket after basket the final quarter to eventually tie the score and then narrowly exceed it, the frustrated home team had to watch theirs repeatedly bounce from the rim.
Scorers included Lexy Silva 3-0 4-6 10, Tamara Vela 2-0 3-6 7, Reina Garza 2-2 2-2 6, Katlen Davila 2-0 4 and Carla Rodriguez 1-0 2. The Lady Broncos landed nine of 15 free-throw attempts for 60 percent and the Lady Eagles eight of 15 for 53 percent.
The loss left the Lady Broncos at 5-3 in district, with playoff hopes not as strongly guaranteed but still certainly possible.
"We’ve got to win a lot more games to be able to get out now,” said Head Coach Ryan Bobo.
The Broncos and Lady Broncos will be open Friday - and then 7-1 and 6-3, respectively - because scheduled opponents Lubbock Harmony forfeited their season. They will be on the road Tuesday to face the so-far-top-in-district Petersburg Buffaloes.
