Lady Wildcats aim for playoffs

Published January 14, 2013 5:00pm by Josie Musico

Wellman-Union’s Lady Wildcats haven’t seen as many wins this season as they wish, but are still improving every game.

The Lady ‘Cats are so far 2-5 in district and 4-14 overall, but with district season only half underway could still advance if they win most of the rest of their games.

Head coach Todd Ellis described his goals as "try to get better in order to win every game and make the playoffs.”

Ellis, a longtime coach of multiple sports at Wellman-Union, is joined this year by Assistant Coach Jamie Richardson.

Returning to varsity this year are seniors Tori Browne and Abi Lindsey and Rosa Olivas. Newcomers include Kelsey Fulford, Breck Faught, Lexi Olivas, Tristan Bake, Sierra Wheatley, Kalynn Johnson and Beth Gann.

The Lady ‘Cats have had some good and less-than-good memories so far this season. A highlight, according to Ellis and most of the team, was a Dec. 14 victory over Loop in which they trailed the Lady Longhorns the first half, then pulled ahead in the second.

They’ve displayed great levels of that same never-give-up attitude all season, Ellis said.

"It was a true testament for the saying ‘Never Quit,” he said. "This is a young team and these girls are having their ups and downs, but they have never quit on getting better.”
