Wellman-Union’s Breck Faught concentrates on a jump shot. The Lady Wildcats lost to Dawson Tuesday night.
Wellman-Union’s pack of Wildcats are still winless, but aren’t ready to give up yet.
The ‘Cats’ most recent loss was Tuesday in Dawson, at 24-54. They trailed the Dragons 3-11, 8-31 and 17-40 each quarter.
Head Coach JoeBob Ussery noted that his squad was short-handed due to illnesses, but the available Wildcats showed enough strength for a full team. They put up quite a fight defensively, but the Dragons showed too much fire from behind the three-point line.
"The guys we had fought hard, and it was closer than the score indicates,” he said. "The guys worked hard on defense, but 10 threes are hard to overcome.”
Scorers included Luis Gonzales 12, Martin Loewen 6, Nate Steiger 4 and Braden Caldwell 2.
The Lady Wildcats suffered a 41-52 Dawson loss earlier that evening.
The Lady ‘Cats were down 6-12 at the end of the first quarter and 15-22 at halftime. Each team scored 14 in the third quarter, but the Lady Dragons’ high shooting percentage continued to dominate the rest of the match.
"The Dawson girls shot the lights out of the gym,” said Head Coach Todd Ellis. "They shot the ball well. Our girls played well too, but came up short.”
Rosa Olivas led the Lady ‘Cats with 15 points, followed by Sierra Wheatley with 11.
Wellman-Union’s junior high boys team lost 17-34 Monday night to Klondike. Marcos Escobar had 10 points.
"Our defense has been better, as this was the least amount of points allowed in a game,” said Coach Isaac Martinez. "I hope the boys take some time during their break to continue getting better and have some of their weaknesses become a new strength.”
