Wellman-Union’s Breck Faught fights off Lady Eagle defense. The Lady Wildcats suffered a 50-36 Ropes loss Tuesday night.
Wellman-Union’s pack of Lady Wildcats played a great first half against Ropes Tuesday night, but unfortunately not a great entire game.
The Lady ‘Cats maintained a steady early-game lead over the visiting Lady Eagles, but somehow lost 50-36.
They led 16-11 at the end of the first quarter and 26-22 at halftime, but stayed tied early in the third until the scoreboard dropped below their favor. Partly due to weak defense and more than one pass that mistakenly landed straight in the wingspan of a defending Lady Eagle, they were down 30-39 at the end of the third and even further through the entire fourth.
"We played a great first half, and in the second half we played with less intensity,” said head coach Todd Ellis. "We never gave up, but Ropes girls did not give up either, and they made their points and did not turn the ball over as much as we did. Turnovers cost us dearly.”
Scorers included Sierra Wheatley 6-0 0-1 12, Abi Lindsey 4-0 1-2 9, Rosa Olivas 3-0 6, Lexi Olivas 2-0 4, Breck Faught 1-0 1-2 3 and Tori Browne 1-0 2. The Lady ‘Cats landed two of nine free-throw attempts for 22 percent and the Lady Eagles 10 of 19 for 53 percent.
Ropes’ Lacy Jackson scored 19 points for the Lady Eagles.
Ellis added that there is still time for the improvement they need before district season starts Tuesday in Borden County.
"We are a young team, and we will fix this,” he said.
Wellman-Union’s junior high girls team won big Monday night against Loop. They earned a 51-11 victory over the Lady Longhorns with quarterly advantages of 15-0, 22-4 and 37-8. Scorers included Bianca Hughes 19, Jordan Conner 9 and Kayleigh Forbes 5.
"We came out this week much more prepared and played better as a team,” said Coach Jami Richardson. "I’m proud of what they accomplished.”
