Wellman-Union has a fairly young girls basketball team, but is still ready for some big challenges this season.

The Lady Wildcats suffered their first loss of their new season Tuesday - 46-37 to New Home - after they opened it the week before with a Southland victory.

"I was really proud of our girls for never giving up,” said head coach Todd Ellis. "They fought hard through the whole game.”

The Lady ‘Cats scored in the first quarter only on a three-point shot by Rosa Olivas, while the visiting Lady Leopards scored 10. By halftime they were down 12-20. Both teams scored fairly evenly in each of the next two quarters, but the Lady ‘Cats were never able to lower their deficit they way they needed.

"(We) started out slowly, but we regained our composure and finished strong,” Ellis said. "We just came up short.”

Varsity newcomer Sierra Wheatley led the Lady ‘Cats with 11 points, followed by Breck Faught with 10, Olivas with 6, Tori Browne with 5 and Abil Lindsey with 2.

The team will play again at 1 p.m. Saturday in Petersburg and will be at home again Nov. 27 to face Ropes.
The boys’ first game was Friday in Plains. For more on the Wildcats’ new season, keep checking the Brownfield News.
