Lady Broncs open tourney with Cotton Center heartbreaker

Good news - Meadow’s girls hoops squad stayed ahead nearly the entire first round of their home tournament Thursday morning.

Not-so-good news - The 20 seconds in which they fell behind Cotton Center happened to be the last 20 of the game, leaving the Lady Broncos with a heartbreaking 43-45 loss.

The Lady Broncos (8-7) were ahead through three full quarters, then down 42-43 in the final seconds. A free throw by freshman Lexy Silva tied the scoreboard, but Lady Elk free throws with two seconds on the clock brought the visiting team back up.

Point guard and routinely-leading scorer Tamara Vela, a junior, watched the game from the sidelines while recovering from an injury. Head Coach Ryan Bobo said he was pleased with the performance of her fellow Lady Broncos during her absence.

"Our other girls stepped up and played really well,” he said. "I’m proud of the girls.”

Scorers included Carla Rodriguez 5-2 16, Lexy Silva 5-0 3-6 13 and Katlen Davila 2-0 4. The Lady Broncos landed six of 13 free-throw attempts.

The Lady Broncos will play again at 11 a.m. Friday against either Kingdom Preparatory Academy or Hart.
