Both the Wellman-Union ‘Cats and Lady ‘Cats had a difficult night on the hardwood Friday as both the boys and girls teams got clawed by the O’Donnell Eagles on their own home court.
The Wellman-Union girls scored 43 and the O’Donnell Lady Eagles scored 64. The ‘Cats came up short once again with W-U scoring 32 and the Eagles 55.
The Lady Cat’s were rocked on their heels beginning in the first quarter with O’Donnell scoring 21 and W-U fighting for 12. The second quarter went much better for the ladies who scored nine and held the Lady Eagles to eight. The third quarter was an even match with the Lady ‘Cats cutting out 14 for the frame, evenly matched with the Lady Eagles.  The fourth quarter;however, didn’t go as well for W-U with the girls only scoring eight and the Lady Eagles clawing out 21 points.
The leading ladies for the night were Rosa Olivas and Lexi Olivas with Rosa scoring 12 and Lexi scoring 10.
“It was a great game for three quarters, then we ran out of gas and the didn’t,” said W-U girls coach Todd Ellis. “I really thought if we played four good quarters we might beat them, but we came up short.  I am still proud of the effort the girls gave.”
The boys hit the court in the first quarter putting 10 on the board, but the Eagles bested that by scoring 16. The second quarter cut into the ‘Cats’ chances at a win when they only scored two against a heavy Eagles defense. The Eagles ran away with the second once again scoring 16.
The third quarter went a little better for W-U who scored 12, evenly matching O’Donnell. The final quarter was close, but not enough to pull away with W-U scoring eight and the Eagles scoring 11.
Wellman-Union will face Borden County Tuesday for an away game.
