It was a mixed bag for the Wellman-Union basketball program Friday night as the Lady ‘Cat came away with a win against the Loop Lady Longhorns, 54-17 while the ‘Cats came close but couldn’t pull it off losing 35-26.
Every quarter belonged to the Lady ‘Cats who took the first period with 11 while Loop was only able to put two on the board.  The second quarter was a little closer with Wellman-Union scoring nine while the Lady Longhorns were able to score four,  The third period was a strong showing for Wellman-Union who scored 15 compared to Loop’s five.  The final quarter was where the Lady ‘Cats were really able to dominate the Lady Longhorns scoring 17 to Loop’s six.
The leading scorers for the girls were Rosa and Lexi Olivas with Rosa scoring 18 and Lexi coming away with 11.
“Great team effort by our girls,”said W-U girls basketball coach Todd Ellis. “We played four complete quarters. It was a great effort, and a good win for us.”
And while the Lady ‘Cats walked away with a win, the boys team was not as fortunate.
The first quarter belonged to Loop who scored 12 with Wellman-Union walking away with seven.  The second quarter belonged to the ‘Cats who scored seven while Loop scored six.  The Longhorns pulled away by one in the third quarter scoring seven compared to W-U’s six.
The fourth quarter once again belonged to Loop who walked away with 10 while W-U’s final quarter score was six.
The top scorer for W-U was Luis Gonzales with 12 points.
The ‘Cats will face off Tuesday night with Dawson in Dawson.
