The Wellman-Union basketball program took another hit Friday night against the Klondike Cougars and Lady Cougars who won both games on the ‘Cats home ground.
The Lady Cats lost to Klondike 37-39 while the boys varsity lost 56-25.
The first quarter for the Lady ‘Cats was close but Klondike was able to put 10 on the board compared to W-U’s 9. The second quarter was a matched set with both scoring 9. The third quarter had W-U losing a little ground with the Lady Cats coming away with four and Klondike walked away with 11. The third quarter was where the Lady Cats put on some steam with 15 points, but not enough to walk away with the game. Klondike in the fourth quarter was still able to put 9 on the board, which was enough to secure the game.
Leading scorer for the night was Rosa Olivas with 10.
“Hard fought game by both teams,” said girls basketball coach Todd Ellis. “We quit attacking the basket in the third quarter. We missed too many baskets off the block.
The boys game wasn’t as close as the girls. In the first quarter, the Cats were only able to come away with two while Klondike was able to put 15 on the board. The second quarter W-U scored 4 while the Cougars were able to score another 10. The ‘Cats came back a little stronger in the third with 11 points while Klondike was able to walk away with 17. The final quarter W-U put 8 on the board while Klondike was able to score 14.
The leading scorers for the boys was Albert Alaniz with six as well as Martin Loewen with six.
Wellman-Union will face off with O’Donnell Tuesday night for an away game.
