A thick cloud of black smoke hovered over Brownfield Thursday afternoon as Brownfield Fire Department personnel battled a fire near the 1000 block of East Hill.
Three trucks and six firefighters were dispatched to the scene at about 6:30 p.m. after the homeowner called to report the fire.
BFD Fire Chief Dennis Rowe said the homeowner was asleep in the living room and smelled smoke coming from the back bedroom of the residence.
Rowe said the fire was isolated to the back bedroom but smoke damage was sustained throughout the house.
The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time and is under investigation.
